UArctic-HIT Training Centre / UArctic Regional Centre in China

Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) hosts the UArctic Regional Centre in China, which provides a hub bridging UArctic and its members in China. Its activities include broadening knowledge of UArctic in China and broadening its voice, and facilitating collaboration on Arctic research by UArctic members in China. 

The Regional Centre was established on February 26, 2019. 

 

Four main goals are outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), alongside relevant activities:

1. Make UArctic-HIT Training Centre a hub organization bridging UArctic and its members in China

  • Train staff of the UArctic-HIT Training Centre to carry out their work under the mission, goals, and values of UArctic;
  • Build a strong network among UArctic members in China;
  • Collect views and suggestions from UArctic members in China towards the UArctic and report them to UArctic;
  • Organize a meeting to be held in HIT for UArctic leadership members and representatives, professors, and students of UArctic members to discuss common interests, values, and future collaborations. 

2.Broaden the voice and to expand knowledge of UArctic in China

  • Give presentations to both UArctic and non-UArctic member institutions in China on UArctic's mission, goals, and values, and encourage Chinese non-UArctic member institutions to join UArctic where relevant;
  • Build sciences popularization and education capability, and publish cultural products on the arctic to improve public knowledge and awareness towards the Arctic.

3. Establish an Arctic-related education system for students in China

  • Provide training courses for the faculty of Arctic member institutions in China;
  • Provide Arctic courses to students from UArctic member institutions, especially to Chinese UArctic member university students;
  • Organize international Arctic Summer/Winter School every year to recruit students from members of UArctic;
  • Provide special financial support to Arctic Indigenous students to attend the Summer/Winter School;
  • Merge the Arctic-related education system established under UArctic-HIT Training Centre with the UArctic north2north program.

4. Carry out Arctic-related research by collaborating with Arctic Universities

  • Train students with basic research ability, measurement and analysis methods of old and emerging POPs, for example;
  • Organize an international polar academic workshop/forum/conference annually;
  • Encourage non-Arctic member institutions to participate in Thematic Networks and carry out joint projects.
