The Scottish Arctic Network (ScAN) is composed of all UArctic higher education institutions in Scotland and operates as a UArctic Regional Centre for the benefit of those members. This includes establishing a working relationship of mutual collaboration for long-term collaboration and dialogue between UArctic members in Scotland and its Arctic members.
ScAN is a formalized structure within the Scottish academic community with agreed Objectives and Terms of Reference. It came into existence in 2021 after a period of network development following the launch of the Scottish Government Arctic Policy Framework in 2019.
The role of the Scottish UArctic Regional Centre in UArctic, as defined in the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU):
ScAN shall enhance the visibility of UArctic goals and activities within Scotland with a special emphasis on the academic community;
ScAN shall maintain a website, a mailing list of members, and hold regular meetings of its Steering Group to support the exchange of information, particularly that relating to UArctic activity;
ScAN shall promote and encourage UArctic initiatives relating to student and staff mobility;
ScAN will actively encourage participation and leadership in UArctic Thematic Networks;
ScAN shall apply for funding to hold events to improve networking and inclusion for members, and especially early career researchers;
ScAN will source and make funding available for travel for ECRs to conduct research and to attend conferences;
ScAN will be involved in lobbying and dissemination to promote the research of Scottish scholars.
